Hormones are chemicals that change a girl’s body into a young woman’s body. But hormones can also affect mood and emotions.
Girls who are going through puberty might feel a little more sensitive than they used to. Little things might make them sad or upset more quickly or easily. They might also feel more self-conscious, worried, or stressed about the big changes going on in their life and in their bodies.
It’s normal to have “big feelings.” But it can be hard to feel sad, lonely, anxious, confused, angry, frustrated, and more, and to not know why or what to do.
It’s important for girls to know they’re not alone. They may need someone trusted to talk to, like a parent, school counselor, or a good friend. It can also help to listen to music, go for a walk, take a long shower, spend time with a pet, or take some other kind of break.
